FLOW CYTOMETRY

Flow Cytometry Service (FCS) of IIM consists of a FACSCalibur flow cytometer and all the necessary associated equipment (MilliQ system, scales, vortex, etc.). The cytometer allows the application of a great number of techniques, although it is commonly used to detect and count bacteria and small phototrophic protists in marine environments.

It also allows, with certain limitations inherent in the model, the selection of cells radioactively marked or fluorescent activated cell (sorting). The FCS is used by IIM researchers, but it is available for other researchers, organisms and companies on a cost for use basis. Nowadays it operates as a self-service.

OBJECTIVES

  • To offer an IIM internal service of flow cytometry (FACScalibur flow cytometer) for the analysis of plankton samples and other type of samples
  • To offer an external flow cytometry service for other organisms and companies
