PROJECTS
Population structure, reproductive strategies and demography of redfish (Genus Sebastes) in the Irminger Sea and adjacent waters (ICES V, XII and XIV; NAFO 1)

Introduction
The present diverse project is developed to co-ordinate and support the international research activities directed towards the most important questions related to the biology and exploitation of the highly migratory and straddling redfish resources in the Irminger Sea. It is divided into the three main workpackages:

1.- Population structure

This workpackage focuses on the identification and delimitation possible distinct stocks of the redfish occurrences in the Irminger Sea and adjacent waters. Currently there is an important controversy among researchers regarding the number of stocks inhabiting the studied area. This problem has prevented a proper management of the resource. The workpackage deal this problem from three different research lines: Morphologic analyses, Otolith shape and elemental contents, and Genetic analyses.

2.- Reproductive strategies

The redfish exploited in the Irminger Sea is the mature part of the population. It remaind unknown the recruitment proccess, the location of the nusery area, size and age at maturity and fecundity. All this are key biological parameters dealt within this Workpackage.

3.- Abundance and demography

Due to the its particular distribution, the abundance estimation is difficult. It will be conducted assessment surveys with new methodologies for a better estimation of the abundance. Redfish ageing is also dealt within this workpackage.

The Institute of Marine Research (Vigo) act as coordinator for the workpackage 2 and with important contribution in workpackage 1. Our contribution in WP 3 is restricted to age determination.
