The research carried out is oriented to the study of the fisheries in the North Atlantic.
The research lines cover both the study of the population dynamics of the exploited fish populations,
basically cod, american plaice, redfish and greenland halibut, as well the study of several biological parameters,
such as growth and reproduction. All of it with the aim of improving the knowledge of the population ecology and
the mecanishms determining the fluctuation of their abundance.
In 2001 the group has worked on the populations of cod and shrimp in Flemish Cap, Northeast Arctic cod, redfish
along the North Atlantic and European hake on the Galician shelf.
Since 1988, we conduct an annual groundfish survey on Flemish Cap, where it is determined the state of the fish
and crustacean populations. The information gathered in the survey together with the data taken by observers onboard
the commercial vessels is the main source for the population assessments carried out within the Scientific Council
of the NAFO (Northwest Atlantic fisheries Organization). The group has studied the impact of climatic and oceanographic
factors on the recruitment of the northeast Arctic cod.
Within the Population Ecology research line, we still work on three basic aspects: population identification,
growth and reproduction, always trhough a population perspective. Thus, we conduct a research project on population delimitation
of redfish in the Irminger Sea and adjacents waters using orphometric and populational techniques. We work on growth analysis of
several populations of redfish and cod. And finally, one of our current main research line is the study of the reproductive ecology of several species,
working with the analysis of the reproductive potential and its influence on the recruitment proccess.
