CAIBEX is based upon comparative studies of two contrasting areas where upwelling and filaments arise, both within the context provided by the CAIBOX study. The Galician area is subject to intermittent upwelling mainly in summer, while the Moroccan area has almost year round strong upwelling.

In both areas, similar monitoring operations are being carried out throughout one annual cycle to provide the context in which identical 3- week long intensive experiments will be executed. The field work is complemented by computer modelling studies to help guide and interpret the observations.
