Welcome to Cria

Three dimensional circulation of the Ria de Vigo

CRIA is a project funded by the Xunta de Galicia from September 2005 to October 2008. The overall aim is to determine the horizontal and vertical circulation of the Ria de Vigo, and understand how the circulation is related to the high productivity and the sporadic occurrence of Harmful Algal Blooms. The original scope of the project has been widened by the formation of an international team of marine scientists from Spain, Britain and the United States, who are co-operating in field observations and computer modelling of the Ria, and by support from the European Fleet for Airborne Research programme. Moreover, two commercial enterprises have supported us with the loan of instrumentation for the field work. Two experiments are planned - CRIA1 in September 2006 and CRIA2 in June 2007.

The improvements in understanding of the relations between hydrography, circulation and small plankton in the Ria, together with hydrodynamic model predictions will provide significant support in relation to problems associated with marine spills, search and rescue, water quality control, fish and aquaculture, geophysical research, coastal change, effects of coastal systems in the carbon cycle, marine safety and management of the Galician marine environment.

If you are interested in data gathered in CRIA, or in results arising from the project, you will find a summary of both within this site. The CRIA project has as a goal the sharing of information and knowledge of the Ria de Vigo. We intend that the knowledge we gain through our scientific research will be of use to others, scientists and non-scientists.
