The Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) is one of the main marine research centers in the Iberian Peninsula. Looking at the Atlantic from Vigo, a city with a strong connection with the sea, the IIM-CSIC faces the challenge of increasing our knowledge about the ocean, from its physical characteristics to the food we take from it and the processes that bind the whole system together.

The IIM-CSIC is looking for outstanding senior researchers (R4) to apply for an ATRAE position.

Deadline

The 2025 call of the «PROGRAMA ATRAE», funded by the Spanish National Funding agency for Research (AEI), aims to facilitate the incorporation of internationally recognized senior researchers who have recently developed a relevant period of their professional activity abroad.

The programme offers Research Grants up to €1 million (with both direct and indirect costs included) for 3-4 years projects.

his amount may be increased to €1,2 million for researchers linked to research organizations in the United States for at least 5 years (from January 1, 2019). The minimum annual gross salary will be 80.000€ (commensurate to research experience) with the compromise to create a permanent position before the end of the funding.

Candidates must have obtained their PhD prior to the 1st of January 2018 and have been professionally affiliated (contractual link or equivalent) with a foreign research institution for at least 5 years in the period between 1 January 2019 and the start date of the application period.

Interested candidates need to send an Expression of Interest (EoI), including a detailed CV ands a cover letter to direccion@iim.csic.es before 9th of May 2025.

The selection of candidates will be carried out by the scientific committee of the IIM and selected candidates will be communicated by the 11th of May 2025 and supported throughout the application process.

About the IIM

The Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) is one of the most important marine science centers in the Iberian Peninsula. Based in Vigo— a city deeply connected to the Atlantic Ocean—the IIM-CSIC works to deepen our understanding of the ocean, exploring everything from its physical properties to the marine life it supports, and uncovering how all these elements are connected in one vast, dynamic system.

The IIM-CSIC integrates the expertise of its four core departments—Ecology and Marine Resources, Oceanography, Biotechnology and Food Science—to address the complex challenges facing marine ecosystems through a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach. Together, the four departments work within IIM's overarching mission: to understand and preserve the ocean as a complex, dynamic system while supporting a sustainable, responsible use of its resources. Also, IIM actively engages in international collaborations to enhance its research impact.

The IIM was one of the first centres in Spain to be awarded an ATRAE position in the first call of the programme in 2023, and can provide administrative support for the application.
